How do I select the print I want?
There are many prints to choose from. When you add to cart there is a place to
type in the print number and print description.
What kind of fabrics do you use?
Nearly all of the print and solid fabrics through out the website are 100% cotton. All
of the fabrics are good quality. The back of the blankets are done in a good quality
corresponding solid Cotton-polly blend. We choose this because is lighter weight
and has a smoother hand. The inside of the blanket is constructed with 2 layers of
cotton muslin or Cotton-polly broadcloth.
Is the fine grade river stone safe?
Yes. You may have read on another site that it is porous, that it won't dry, that it is
sharp and will wear out the blanket, or that it will mold and other things. With all due
respect to the author of that site, none of this is true. Fine grade river stone is just
that. It is natural, clean, smooth and certainly not porous. So many of our
customers prefer the fine grade stone that we have eliminated Polly bead.
How do I decide how much weight to have put into an item?
We at Salt Of The Earth Weighted Gear are not Professional Occupational
Therapists. The advice we offer is based on recommendations offered by most
OT's. It is important that you get the recommendation of your own OT.
The general guides for blanket weight is 10% of the users weight plus a pound or
two. Your OT would consider the strength, mental capacity, amount of supervision
and the individual's level of need for pressure.
The amount of weight you put into a vest should not be over 8% of the user's
weight or more weight than the user can comfortably carry for an hour. Your OT
should help you decide.
Why don't you offer weighted blankets over 20 pounds?
1... Once a person reaches adulthood, or around 150 pounds, their bone structure
will not change much, no matter how much they come to weigh. So a 15 pound
blanket is often sufficient for any size adult. For those needing extra weight, a 20
pound blanket offers a very effective amount of pressure.
2... An extra heavy weighted blanket can be surprisingly awkward to handle.
Folded, a 20 pound blanket is much like holding two 10 pound sacks of potatoes
and the user should be able to lift and carry it. Spread over the body, it is very
comforting, but not very easy to manipulate. Unfolded, it is a dead weight, like a
small child who is not too heavy until he/she goes limp in your arms. So if you want
to readjust it in the night, you'll be glad it's not more than 20 pounds.
3... Though our blankets are machine washable, 20 pounds is the maximum we feel
would be safe in the average washing machine.
4....We feel that though our blankets are well constructed, with 4 layers of fabric,
over 20 pounds could put too much strain on the stitching when the blanket is being
pulled around and manipulated.
If you still want more weight, we suggest that you purchase two blankets to use
together. If you wanted 30 pounds, you could buy two 15 pound blankets or a 20
pound blanket an a 10 pound blanket.
How do I decide on the size for a blanket?
A weighted blanket should at least reach from the chin to a few inches past the toes.
If the weight is embedded only in the body area of the blanket, a small child can use
a size Youth, Average, Tall, or Large.
If the blanket will be carried to different places, like in the car and in the family room,
the smallest size that fits the user is recommended.
If the blanket will always stay on the bed, larger sizes are recommended.
We do not make Queen size weighted blankets because the weight is not effective
spread out that far
How do I decide on the size for a weighted vest?
Please use the size charts on the vest page and measure carefully.
You will have the option or having the vest constructed with the sides adjustable by
about 6 inches on each side.
What is your return policy?
If you decide you want a different size, weight, color or fill than you ordered, you
may return it in unused condition within 15 days and we will replace it or refund your
money. The postage will be your responsibility. If your order is defective or is not
the size, weight, print or fill that you ordered, return it in unused condition within 30
days and we will replace it or refund your money. We will cover the postage. We
cannot offer refunds on special orders.
How do I wash my blanket or vest?
To wash a weighted blanket or vest, fill your washer with cool water and mild
detergent. Add the weighted blanket or vest and 2 or 3 heavy bath towels. Wash on
gentle cycle, using the wet towels to balance the machine during the spin cycles.
Stand by during spin cycles in case your machine doesn't shut down if it gets out of
balance. Line dry only
